General Discussion / AMA

Ask Me Anything:

I want to do a video on this eventually once we have enough questions. Note that these are quite old at this point, but I never got around to making a video because there aren't enough of them.

Post more here, I'd love to answer your questions!

These are the ones transferred from the Discord server:

Hey I posted my Question in the general AMA before I saw this one. Here is a repost: So excited for this: A while back you had one book In the background of your videos- "Real time rendering" and I have a collection of books myself but none have given me an understanding of how to put it all together. Q: How have you learned how to make an engine, putting all the parts together without leaning on libraries? Context: It seems 99% of programmers heavily lean on libraries and eventually the amount of people that will know lower level operations is going to diminish. My Q is not about learning a language but the systems to make it without libraries. You and Handmade hero are my only source of education outside of frameworks and libraries

What music do you listen to as you write code?

Shadows of Illumina General / Shadows of Illumina FAQ
Last post by travisvroman - Feb 13, 2026, 09:33 PM
What is Shadows of Illumina?
Shadows of Illumina is an action RPG built on top of the Kohi Game Engine. It's an expansive world that encourages exploration. More info will be released as the design is honed in over time.

Is Illumina a 2D or 3D game?
Shadows of Illumina is fully 3D.

How long is this project going to take?
There is no set length in mind for this. It's designed to evolve over time. Realistically, I hammer away at this for less than part time hours a week at the moment, generally on the order of 10-15 hours a week. It's going to probably take a few years to get this out the door.

What platforms are supported?
Windows, Linux, and macOS for the time being.

Is the source code available?
Initially, no. While the engine is, and always will be, open source - the game code will not be open sourced initially. I do, however, have plans to open source it around 2 years or so after its release.

Are the assets available?
The assets for Shadows of Illumina are not available while the game is still in development. Unlike the code, there is a strong possibility they won't ever be given licensing.

Is there a website?
Yes. https://shadowsofillumina.com - it will be updated as time continues.

Stay tuned here for updates, as I will add them when necessary.

Edit: updated with question about the assets

That was fast! And I love that you named it SpIRC!  ;D

Looks good, honestly. Simple and clean. Do you have something that runs on Linux?

This, exactly. I think/hope that we'll maybe see a resurgence of forums in the wake of this. It seems quite a few folks out there share the same sentiment. Thanks for joining and posting!

Hey, that looks pretty good - I like it! The desaturated nature of it makes it stick out from most, IMO.
